about:

it's a work in progress...

Hi there! I'm Brittany.

I’m a feminist who likes my husband to hold doors open for me.
I’m a mother who looks suspiciously at the moms who have it all together (because HOW?!)

I work full time and write in my spare time (which is obviously a paradox because did I mention I have kids?) I love and follow Jesus with all my heart, and I also question where Christianity has led us today. I'm a good listener with a terrible memory.

I'm a totally structured Type A personality who often feels like I don’t have it together at all.

Oh, and I'm a type 1 diabetic who lives for chocolate. Go figure.

WOMEN I ADMIRE:

  • The spiritual muscle of Barbara Brown Taylor and her approach to faith. Favorite book of hers: "Holy Envy"

  • The compelling storytelling, poetic creativity, and humor of Anne Lamott. (Read "Traveling Mercies" if you have not already done so.)

  • Trailblazing feminists. Yes, Gloria Steinem and RBG; but also Audre Lorde and Roxane Gay. "Bad Feminist" by Gay is one of my favorites.

  • The brilliance of Brene Brown."I Thought It was Just Me" changed my life.

  • Melinda Gates and all she has done with her platform for women and human rights. Not just in America but all over the world.

  • Taylor Swift. Not only for her catchy music, but also for being an outspoken champion of/for women. Current favorite Taylor song: "Only the Young"

  • My mother, in every way possible. If I can be half the woman she is, I'd call it a win.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES ME:

  • My husband. I cannot explain how much the feminist in me HATES saying that, but it's true all the same. (He likes to call himself the original feminist, so I give myself a pass here.)

  • Outspoken leaders of faith who are working to recover the heart of Christianity, and are making it okay to have doubt and ask questions.

  • My two sons. They inspire me to make sure I am doing everything in my power to help them become people who recognize the inherent value in themselves and all of creation. I'm especially inspired to ensure they reject patriarchal systems and language that oppresses and demeans women.

  • Gretchen Rubin's book "Better Than Before." Game changer.

  • Long drives in the car by myself, windows down, listening to loud worship music. Or Taylor Swift.

  • Symmetry. My deep need for things to be balanced makes me feel settled.

  • Coffee.
